Ryker stood in the doorway of the bar a moment before focusing on Gunnar and making a beeline for his table. Not a good sign. As a child she’d had nightmares about what could have happened if Magnum had sent him after her and her mother. His long black hair loosely braided and his dark gaze all-encompassing, the tall man looked as scary as she remembered.

Luna suppressed a shiver and swiped her sweaty palms against her coarse blue denim apron before she finished wiping down a table. The place was packed and, between the raucous conversations and the clink of glasses and cutlery, she’d need to be closer to hear Gunnar and Ryker’s discussion, but the grim expression on her protector’s face had her speculating.

Gunnar’s sister might have decided complaining to Drew was worth any aggravation she’d be forced to suffer. Ray had somehow found out about her, and it didn’t seem as though he and the young mother would travel in the same circles. Chloe’s accusations in the bar might have woven their way through the pack by now and made a few people think twice about welcoming her with open arms.

She could deal with being avoided if it meant she’d be safe. After so many years alone, it always made her uncomfortable being around people she didn’t know well. She still spent her first fifteen minutes in a new place looking for a way out in case she needed to run.

All of the years she’d lived in fear Ed Sinclair would walk through the door of wherever she’d been working and drag her back to Los Lobos, ruining any peace she’d managed to achieve, her father had been dead. Years spent in fight-or-flight mode, and for what?

She still had trouble believing what Chloe had told her, but it had started making sense. The night they’d run away her mother had been terrified but determined. Looking back now, from the distance of ten years, she had to wonder if her mother had finally been driven to murder. Maybe she hadn’t told Luna what happened that night because she’d wanted to protect her from the brutal truth. She could speculate forever. Gee had been right. Whatever her mother had done, she’d done out of love. No one had any right to judge.

The next time she looked up, Ryker had left. Gunnar’s expression remained grim. He held up his coffee cup, and she grabbed a carafe from the drink station. Maybe she could make him smile. It was the least she could do for a guy whose usual duties probably included something more important and infinitely more rewarding than babysitting her.

She gave him her best “kill them with kindness” smile. “So, what did Ryker have to say that turned your world to crap five minutes after he arrived?”

He watched her fill his cup, and his expression grew grimmer. “Drew wants to see you.”

His announcement, coupled with Ryker’s sudden appearance, made her stomach roll over. The enforcer’s standard method of handling a problem usually involved someone dying, and anyone with half a brain stayed out of his way.
